Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is seeking an Manufacturing Engineer with real world experience and application who will interface with the design engineering team but will primarily focus on the day-to-day hardware fabrication, production floor layout and flows, process improvements, inputs to the NASA planners for machine availability and purchasing/procurement, to optimize the manufacturing plan for operation, equipment, schedule, packaging and product quality for the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) system development and upgrades task at MSFC. The design and development of the ECLSS hardware consists of fluid systems with mechanical design and material/vendor component selection related to drive systems, rotating mechanisms, pumps, sealing technology, and packaging.


The Manufacturing Engineer will:


• Provide technical leadership responsiveness while working in the shop environment.
• Possess knowledge of the hardware design and design intent to make process improvement recommendations.
• Provide support for the ECLSS hardware fabrication to other Manufacturing Engineers, technicians and support personnel on:
    o material orders
    o manufacturing plans
    o manufacturing schedule
    o precision assembly feedback for improved efficiency
    o test fixtures
    o handling equipment, or tooling needed to facilitate the build process
• Review engineering hardware design drawings.
• Offer producibility inputs to the drawings as a primary stakeholder for drawing release. Drawing inputs should primarily focus on the ability to maximize efficiency related to:
    o Machining, welding, coating, or alignment and assembly fit through a general understanding of industry, military, and/or NASA specifications and standards.
    o Providing critical Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) inputs to ensure the parts have proper tolerances for manufacturability.
• Provide oversight of the ECLSS design team piece parts and assembly builds from start to finish.
• Accountable for understanding where each piece of hardware, vendor components, and final assemblies are in the build process for schedule and cost reports and tracking.
• Work with the ECLSS design team to assist in discrepancy reports as well as design technical interchange meetings.
• Provide ECLSS Project Management with production schedule updates, status reports, and real time inputs associated with production impacts that affect schedule delivery and/or production costs.




Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 4 years of experience, Masters with at least 8 years of experience, or BS with at least 10 years of experience.


• Manufacturing Engineering experience in a shop environment required.
• Knowledge and experience of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and cost.
• Knowledge and experience of machines and tools, including their design, capability, and run-time for estimating job layout.
• Knowledge and experience using algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their application.
• Knowledge and experience using computer aided design cad software such as CREO/Pro-Engineer, Computer aided manufacturing CAM software, or Computer Numerical Control CNC Mastercam software.
• Knowledge and experience to read and interpret GD&T on engineering drawings.
• Use of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project.
• Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
• Familiarity with NASA space flight processes and requirements.
