Mechanical Design Engineer


To be successful in this position, the applicant must be detail oriented, work independently and collaboratively, possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, and have the ability to:


Provide SLS Structures and Environments (STE) support in the mechanical structural design discipline for the SLS vehicle design 


Support our MSFC customer’s Structural & Mechanical Design Branch (EV32). Specific responsibilities include: 


Independently prepare (or direct others in the preparation of) criteria, computations/analyses, specifications and technical reports in a specific area of technical expertise. 


Select and apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other features of the work which are broad in scope and complexity. 


Create 3D solid models and 2D drawings. 


Review and evaluate the quantity, quality, and overall adequacy of results and conclusions drawn from accomplishment of engineering tasks. 


Operates with general instructions; selected portions of work will be reviewed in detail to measure adequacy of approach, execution, and presentation.




Degree in  Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required.  Typically with a minimum of  15+ yrs. Experience.


Skills and experience should demonstrate: 


Experience as an engineer leading and working with teams and products needed to design, develop, integrate, simulate, models of launch vehicle hardware and systems.


Expertise in complex system end-to-end development ranging from requirements development, environment definition, structural design, hardware integration, and flight verification that lead to flight certification. 


Experience with launch vehicle elements, vehicle integration and analysis and with MSFC system engineering processes. 


High proficiency in CREO 3-D CAD including, but not limited to large assembly management, 2-D drafting, and Windchill product lifecycle management.


Experience with Geometric Dimensioning &Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M-1994) 


Experience with product review and validation procedure such as ISO-9001.


The ability to apply knowledge and experience to timely completion of excellent products and services is required.  Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, and independent problem solving skills are required. 




Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
