This position is part of JSEG’s support to the NASA EM31 Metallurgical Engineering Team under the ESSCA contract.


The position's primary responsibilities are to: 


  • Develop, perform, document and report microstructural analysis of manufactured aerospace hardware and witness test coupons. 
  • Develop a metallurgical understanding of metals processed by casting, forging, welding, selective laser melting, and hot isostatic pressing for the determination of comparative relationships. 
  • Create materials analysis reports pertaining to metallurgical characterization with relevant and appropriate correlation to materials properties.


The selected candidate will:


  • Serve as a fully competent engineer or scientist in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments. 
  • Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering/scientific principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. 
  • Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. 
  • Devise new approaches to satisfy unusual or specialized requirements and will represent the organization at technical meetings and conferences and may guide or be assisted by engineers/scientists or technicians.






Educational requirements are a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Welding Engineering (with demonstrated metallurgical experience) from an ABET accredited institution. Typical educational requirements are the equivalent of an MS with at least 3 years of experience or a BS with at least 5 years of experience. This position requires experience related to responsibilities stated above including experience with solidification processes and understanding the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. Prior experience with nickel, copper, and titanium alloys is preferred.
