The ESSCA contract provides engineering, scientific, and technical support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL.  Our Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks to design and integrate GN&C systems for projects ranging from CubeSats to NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS).


We are searching for a subject matter expert to support simulation and analysis of contact and clearance during SLS liftoff, booster separation, and jettison events.  Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would include:


  • Analysis of vehicle and multi-body dynamics, equations of motion, and trajectories to assess contact and clearance during liftoff, separation, and jettison events
  • Modeling ascent and in-space environments, errors, disturbances, algorithms, sensors, actuators, and mechanisms
  • Simulate and analyze nominal, contingency, and failure scenarios during ascent and in-space flight
  • Develop algorithms and tools for GN&C analysis and design 




Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years of experience, Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.


Skills and experience should demonstrate:


  • Expertise with multi-body, multi-degree of freedom analysis and simulation.  Experience with TREETOPS, CLVTOPS, and contact / clearance analyses is highly desired.
  • Proficiency in FORTRAN, MATLAB, C, Python.
  • Knowledge of flight mechanics and orbital mechanics.
  • Experience in GN&C algorithm development and simulation.


Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and independent problem solving are required.
