The chosen candidate will provide services and support to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Materials and Processes Lab Damage Tolerance Assessment (DTA) Branch (EM21).

The candidate will provide the following support:


  • Define and develop fracture test plans as necessary for conventional metallic, additive manufactured metallic, composite and ablative parts
  • Provide technical insight to develop and document necessary mechanical test plans related to tensile, fracture and fatigue crack growth
  • Submit testing request as necessary and provide assessments of mechanical test data for tensile, fracture and fatigue crack growth
  • Provide technical insight to define and perform necessary fracture and fatigue crack growth analytical predictions
  • Perform analytical predictions of fracture and fatigue crack growth, perform fracture control reviews and insight support, and provide materials review as necessary
  • Provide technical insight for fracture control implementation for hardware including development or review of Fracture Control Plans and coordination of data for development or review of Fracture Control Summary Reports as needed by the program.
  • Provide technical insight for review of materials related to fracture and damage tolerance of composites and metallic structures
  • Provide leadership for integration, coordination, and tracking of assessment efforts between various organizations to determine facility pressure vessel sensitivity to cracks resulting in an understanding of hardware safety relative to inspections, materials, stresses, environments, and load history
  • Perform fracture control implementation and review of fracture and damage tolerance of composites test data




Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 24 years of experience, a Masters with at least 28 years of experience, or a BS with at least 30 years of experience. A Degree in Materials Science, Fracture Mechanics or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required. 


Skills Required:


  • Experience in developing laboratory test plans, analyzing test data and performing assessments related to fracture mechanics
  • Experience in fracture control implementation
  • Experience in review of fracture and damage tolerance of composites test data
