Jacobs ESSCA Group is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a well-established background in real-time embedded software design. The position is in the NASA Flight Software Design group for the development of flight control software on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS).  The candidate will be proficient in object-oriented design and development methodology, particularly C++, C and UML modeling techniques.  The position requires a solid understanding of software development, test, and verification disciplines as well as the CMMI level 3 processes involved. 


The selected applicant will work on a customer / contractor integrated team to:


  • Develop and implement algorithms used for flight control, fault management, sub-system control of SLS
  • Design, code and test safety-critical, human-rated code for SLS flight computers
  • Perform software integration and unit test activities
  • Conduct and participate in design and code reviews
  • Produce weekly and monthly status reports of progress in assigned areas
  • Participate in an agile software development environment
  • Review system requirements and develop derived software requirements
  • Create UML diagrams of detailed software designs 




Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 9 years of experience, Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or BS with at least 15 years of experience.  


The candidate should be highly experienced in the following:


  • Developing real-time embedded software.
  • Proficient in C++ and C.
  • Using commercial real-time operating systems, such as VxWorks.
  • UML modeling of software architectures.
  • Excellent communication, team interaction, collaboration and problem solving skills.
  • Software integration in a lab environment.
  • Change request systems, and the use of formal configuration management tools.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-1553B and ARINC 653 partitioning is desirable.
  • Exposure to tools such as Eclipse, subversion, Enterprise Architect, LDRA is desirable.
  • Knowledge of flight control, avionics, and associated architectures is also desirable.
